Inductee: Jordy Nelson

Wide receiver, Super Bowl Champ, NFL Comeback Player of the Year, Pro Bowl, ESPY Winner, 3rd grade teacher…?

Which one doesn’t belong? For Jordy Nelson, Wide Receiver for the Green Bay Packers, they all do. Jordy Nelson has helped his community in so many ways and teaching is just one of them.

Of course, the Packer boys do some community service with the team in Green Bay. But, Jordy has gone the extra mile to help Wisconsin.

He hosts an annual Offense vs. Defense Softball Game in Appleton, WI which benefits Young Life, a Christian nonprofit organization that pairs adult volunteers with mentor students. The event draws thousands of fans and media attention, allowing it to grow and raise tons of money.

Jordy and his wife, Emily Nelson support YoungLife outside of the softball game as well. The Nelson’s host an annual “Light Up the Night” fundraiser with the proceeds benefiting the Christian organization. This event is auction-based.

When Jordy was out for the season due to injury, he took on a child to mentor one-on-one for YoungLife as well.

But, Jordy Nelson does not just support the community in Green Bay.

In 2014, Jordy and his wife Emily started the Nelson Family Community Foundation, which benefits families in need in his community in Kansas. Jordy’s family’ restaurant, Nelson’s Landing, holds annual benefits to raise money for local families in need.

And finally, we’ll learn why a NFL Wide Receiver became a teacher.

In 2015, Jordy tore his ACL and was out for the season. That year he also found out that a teacher at his son’s school had to get cancer treatment.

In his year off for his injury, a Pro Bowl Wide Receiver was a volunteer substitute teacher to help a teacher who had to receive treatment for cancer.

How often do you hear that sentence?!

Jordy has found a million and one ways to impact his communities. It is for these reasons that we are happy to welcome him into the Good Guy Hall of Fame!!

**Note: Since this was posted, Nelson has been released by the Green Bay Packers and signed by the Oakland Raiders
